Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has decided to provide cheaper electricity to underprivileged areas and industrial zones in Karachi, aiming to reduce the burden on low-income households and support economic activity in the city.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting held at the Chief Minister House with K-Electric Chairman Shaharyar Chishti. The meeting was attended by K-Electric CEO Syed Taha, PSCM Agha Wasif, Secretary Energy Shuaib Ansari, and other senior officials.

During the session, the chief minister directed the Energy Department and K-Electric to jointly conduct a detailed study on a targeted subsidy programme for electricity consumers in Karachi. The plan is expected to identify mechanisms through which subsidised electricity can be provided to deserving households while ensuring sustainability in the power supply system.

Murad Ali Shah also instructed authorities to prepare proposals for supplying affordable electricity to low-income neighbourhoods as well as designated industrial zones. He emphasised that reducing load-shedding in underprivileged areas must be prioritised, especially with the onset of the summer season.

Expressing concern over prolonged power outages in poorer communities, the chief minister said that rising temperatures have significantly increased the difficulties faced by vulnerable segments of society. He stressed the need for practical and immediate solutions to minimise disruptions in electricity supply, particularly in densely populated and economically weaker areas of Karachi.

Officials briefed the meeting on ongoing power supply challenges and potential reforms aimed at improving efficiency and distribution management. The chief minister reiterated that any proposed subsidy mechanism must be carefully designed to ensure that relief reaches genuinely deserving consumers without affecting the overall financial stability of the power sector.

The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader effort to address energy inequality and improve living conditions in Karachi’s underserved communities.
